“Flower Humanz”: Creative Grunge Couple Shoot

This creative grunge couple shoot was born out of the desire to focus on couple posing, so we deliberately kept it simple. I chose literally a random field behind a business parking lot in Phoenix, AZ, and we brought a stool to help play with heights and levels. Charity and James wore white underwear and matching white shirts to get some color contrast into the palette.

Flowers and Flash Took This Creative Grunge Couple Shoot Where it Needed to Go

Charity and James are very intimate people so I knew the shoot was going to feel that way. When it comes to a couples session, if they are down to do something a little different and push it into the editorial space, I roll with it. For this shoot, in true FTD form, I had to add some floral aesthetic by introducing pressed flowers, which I glued onto their bodies with eyelash glue. They both loved the different elements I added.

I think the part of the shoot that I ended up enjoying the most was working with flash. The sun gradually set as we worked, and where some people would’ve packed up once the natural light faded, I knew that some of the best shots were going to come at night.

The way that James and Charity emerge out of the darkness, with the flash reflecting off of the bright white of their clothes, is super striking. The lights of the parking lot hover behind them, and there’s something about the drama of these images that I keep coming back to.

If you’re inspired by this shoot, make sure you dive into this ‘wall of hay’ engagement session, where we got to use flowers in a different way. Take a scroll through my portfolio for more.
